Concerns, Thoughts, and Perceptions: Curriculum & ELLs/ESL There are many things to consider when planning for an ESL student. As a teacher, you should always keep in mind where they are coming from and how much they already know. For me, this will be hard because I grew up around people who only spoke English. I have never really been around people who speak any other language. I know this will have to be a challenge that I overcome as a teacher. It is very important to come up with activities that work for ELL students. They need to understand what is going on in the classroom just as much as anyone else does. There are many ways to adapt the lessons to meet their needs. Sometimes it is even beneficial to the lesson the same way for the entire class. ELL students will need the extra support from me and I know that. It is scary to me to think that some students may just not understand what I am teaching at all. It is even scarier when it is an ELL student because there are only so many ways to adapt the lessons to help them. I will give all the support possible in making sure that all of my students succeed. I think it will definitely be something in teaching that I am going to have to work very hard at. With the help of this ESLP class, I am learning so many different strategies and ways to help these students. I think that in itself will make helping these students so much better for me as the teacher.

Strategies for ESL Students:
1. Graphic Organizers- These make it easier for ESL students to gather information about a topic. This helps them to only write the important points about something. It is important that they learn to try and remember the high points of things so that they don’t try to memorize too much information.
2. Visuals- These are very helpful to them mostly when they really do not know a word. If they have a picture to go with the word then it will be much easier for them to figure out.
3. Group Work- It is helpful for ESL students to work with other students. These students may be able to explain things to them better than anyone else.
